Egyptian LASM houses one of the few Egyptian tomb exhibits in the southern United States. Visitors tour an authentic re-creation of a Ptolemaic-era tomb, circa 300 B.C., modeled after those cut into the rocky cliffs in the Land of the Dead at Thebes. Displayed inside are a 5,000 year-old mummy with a cartonnage mask, several mummified birds, a bird burial jar, an ancient clay vessel, and a ushabti, a small statuette that was believed to come to life magically and perform chores for the deceased. A collection of ancient Greek and Roman artifacts also is displayed, along with maps and interpretive material explaining the interrelation among the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures.
