Space Be mesmerized by Baton Rouge’s star attraction—The Irene W. Pennington Planetarium! One of the largest planetariums in the country, its 60-foot dome theater now has the very latest digital display technologies and software to accurately project 100,000+ stars and celestial objects, as well as using the world’s most extensive, three-dimensional digital mapping of the universe software. The 143-seat theater also shows 8/70 large format films with 15,000 watts of digital sound, together with full-dome laser and LED cove lighting systems for spectacular, out-of-this-world visual effects. Year around program topics vary from the seasonal night sky to mysteries of black holes. The planetarium's Solar System and Universe Galleries and Planet Tower also offer more than 5,000 square feet of out-of-this-world exhibits, where you can weigh yourself on the moon, meet Galileo, see the latest discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, and even touch a falling star—a meteorite a billion years older than any earth rock.
